Navigating how care is paid for can be confusing. Here is a plain-English guide to the main options for people in Surrey and surrounding areas.
Council-Funded Care
If you or someone you know has care needs, Surrey County Council may fund some or all of that care. It starts with a Care Needs Assessment — you can request one through your GP or by contacting the council directly.
The council assesses both care needs and financial circumstances. If they agree to fund support, they may arrange it directly or offer a Direct Payment — money you manage yourself to choose your own provider.
NHS Continuing Healthcare
If someone's primary need is a health need rather than a social care need, they may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare, which the NHS funds entirely regardless of savings or income. Ask your GP or hospital team if you think this might apply.
Direct Payments
If you are receiving a council care package, you can ask for a Direct Payment — money paid to you to purchase care yourself. This gives you more control over who provides your care.
Privately Funded Care
Some people fund their own care from savings, pension, or income. This gives you the most flexibility — you choose the provider and the level of support without needing a council assessment.
Disabled Facilities Grants
If the home needs adaptations — a wet room, grab rails, or a stairlift — there may be grant funding available through the council. We can help you understand this process and point you in the right direction.
